Chelsea reportedly seeking deal for Erling Haaland with player joining next summer

Could Chelsea be the club to pip all the other contenders for the transfer of 20-year-old Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland?

According to a report in England’s The Telegraph, London-based Chelsea is in talks with Dortmund on a transfer deal for Haaland that could see the Norwegian striker join the Blues in the summer of 2022.

Borussia Dortmund’s public stance has been that Haaland will remain with the German club for the upcoming season, although Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola has publicly insisted that all options are still on the table. It’s Haaland’s Dortmund teammate, Jadon Sancho, who is expected to make a move this summer with Manchester United as the reported destination.

With the hefty transfer fee involved, the rumored teams in the running for Haaland’s signature have been the usual names: Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona, although the latter two are dealing with balance sheet issues relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Haaland Transfer Scenarios

Next year is when Haaland’s release clause, reported to be in the range of $90-100 million, supposedly kicks in. But The Telegraph is reporting that Chelsea is seeking to do a deal with Borussia Dortmund that exceeds the release clause fee in order to make it attractive enough for the German club to commit this summer, with the player departing for Chelsea next year at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Reports in the English press indicate that Chelsea could include forward Tammy Abraham in the deal to help mitigate their transfer outlay. The Blues already invested heavily in their attack last summer, splashing major transfer dollars to acquire German duo Kai Havertz ($82 million) and Timo Werner ($58.5 million). Just months before that, they spent big dollars for American star Christian Pulisic ($73 million).

Haaland has become the most sought-after forward in global soccer, wowing fans with his goal-scoring exploits. He broke out at Borussia Dortmund in 2019-20 with 44 goals in 40 competitive matches. This year he nearly equalled the feat with an incredible 41 goals in 41 matches across all competitions.

England star Harry Kane is the other big forward on the market this summer after he expressed a desire to leave Tottenham Hotspur to join a club where he can win titles. The belief is that should Manchester City sign Kane, they would move on from Haaland, leaving Chelsea as the only realistic option to shell out the kind of money that will be necessary.
